Education system

  • The Korean education system is comprised of six years of elementary school, three years of middle school, three years of high school, and four years of university (two years for technical college). The six years of elementary school and three years of middle school are compulsory education, and the school expenses during this period are free of charge. In Republic of Korea, every child of elementary school age, even the children of people without resident status or illegal aliens, has the right to receive an education.
  • Anyone may enter school if documentary proof verifying the fact that the person has been residing in Republic of Korea, such as a basic livelihood security number, apartment rental contract, residential confirmation certificate, family relation certificate, immigration certificate, or foreigner registration certificate, is submitted to the relevant eup, myeon, or dong community centers or elementary schools.

Operation of educational courses

Each academic year is divided into two semesters. Generally, the first semester begins around late February and early March, while the second semester begins around late August and early September.
Schools for foreigners are usually more expensive than regular schools, and students must meet certain requirements, with some schools requiring students to take entrance examinations.

Entrance qualification

  • Students whose parents, or parent, are foreigners
  • Koreans who have resided overseas for more than three years (including people with multiple nationalities)

Admission type

  • The specific details of admission types may differ from school to school, but it is common practice to conduct document screening and hold interviews. Generally, admission is possible at any time throughout the year.
  • The documents required for admission may differ from school to school, but generally, it is necessary to have an immigration certificate, passport, health records, enrollment certificates from previous schools, academic reports, and official language test results from the home country. Since it is different for each school, it is necessary to check in advance.
